Where to sleep at Playa Macao
A resort offers a room. Here, there are several ways to sleep, and they don’t suit the same travellers.
One thing they share, before the detail: no air conditioning anywhere, but a fan in every unit. It is the wood, the palm thatch and the sea breeze that do the work. The roof keeps the heat out, and the nights are cool.
The mezzanine dormitories, for one or two people
A wooden mezzanine: you sleep up in the roof frame, right above the snack bar, and come straight back down into it. The beds share one space, but each is separated from the next by wooden partitions — everyone has their own. It is booked under two names, depending on whether you travel alone or as a pair:

Let’s be clear from the start: you climb a vertical ladder, the ceiling is low — you cannot stand up — and there is no door, only a jute curtain. It is built for backpackers: you go up there to sleep, not to live. If the ladder puts you off, take a bungalow, it is on the ground floor.
With the odd exception, evenings don’t run late here: the snack bar empties early and the place quietens down on its own. In the morning, everyone gets up in their own time — the snack bar comes to life when the first guests arrive, not before.
private mezzanine dormitory for 2 (two people)
Larger, yours alone — and with a real door. It is not above the snack bar but just beside it, to the right of the mezzanine dormitories, and it is reached by a wide staircase rather than a vertical ladder.
It is also the only one with two windows and two small terraces, looking onto the lounge and the pool.
The ceiling is still low, as in all our dormitories, and it has two single beds set end to end rather than side by side. Ideal for two friends; couples generally prefer the bungalow.
tropical A-frame bungalow chalets for 2 (two people)
Sixteen square metres each, under a palm-thatched roof, with a four-poster double bed, a mosquito net, a fan and a small fridge, which counts for more than it sounds: being able to keep cold water and a little fruit to hand is always welcome.
Larger than the dormitories, and the only ones on the ground floor.
They close with a canvas panel rather than a door: nothing here is sealed shut, everything breathes. That is what an ecolodge is, and it is why you fall asleep to the wind in the palm fronds.

Our horses are rescued retirees: they are not available to ride. For a horseback ride, we call on a partner ranch.
